Boost Your Mental Health By Building Others Up – 7 Intangible Gift Ideas

Do you believe that it’s better to give than to receive? While receiving special gifts is always nice, there is an amazing reward that comes from giving something to someone you care about. The gift you give does not always have to be physical or tangible – in fact, some of the most powerful gifts you can give are ones that cannot be seen or touched. 


The Power Of Intangible Gifts

What is an intangible gift? Intangible gifts include things like:

  • Spending quality time with someone
  • Bringing someone a home-cooked meal
  • Helping someone clean their home
  • Volunteering your time
  • Complimenting someone

Intangible gifts don’t cost anything, but their value is immeasurable. Often, people who receive intangible gifts appreciate them just as much (if not even more) than they would appreciate tangible, expensive presents like diamond jewelry or technological gadgets. The best part about intangible gifts is that they do not only benefit the recipient – giving someone an intangible gift can have an enormous benefit on your own mental health.

Simple Intangible Gift Ideas

Building other people up makes us feel warm, worthwhile, needed, and loved. It doesn’t cost you anything, but once you get in the habit of doing it frequently, you may reap the rewards on an ongoing basis. Here are a few simple ideas to help you get started.

  1. If someone you know is feeling stressed, anxious, or nervous, offer encouragement. Let them know that you believe in them – that you are confident they will succeed.
  2. Compliment someone. If you look close enough, you can find something to compliment in just about everyone. If you like your friend’s shoes or admire her attitude about something, tell her. It doesn’t have to be a huge compliment, but it does need to be sincere. 
  3. Smile at everyone, even the person collecting the trash and the person working the register at the store. By spreading positivity to those around you, it will inevitably come back to reward you.
  4. Is there a specific skill you possess? Share the wealth by teaching someone how to master it on their own. Whether you are good at woodworking or a master chef, sharing your skills with someone will help him gain confidence and make him think of you every time he practices his new skill.
  5. If a friend of yours is facing a long to-do list, offer to help with a project. It will give you a sense of purpose, and it will likely be a huge help to your friend.
  6. If you have the financial means to do so, consider donating to a charity. You’ll feel great knowing that your money is going to a cause you care about, and your chosen charity will greatly appreciate your donation (even if it’s as small as $25).
  7. If you don’t have the money to donate to charity, consider volunteering your time instead. Charities and non-profit organizations need volunteers just as much (if not more than) they need financial contributions, and the rewards you reap from your generosity will be immense.

Try It For Yourself!

As an experienced mental health counselor, I can personally attest to the immense benefits that can be earned through the simple act of offering someone an intangible gift. You don’t have to take my word for it, though – get out there and try it for yourself! If you’re feeling hesitant or unsure, start with a simple compliment and work your way up from there. Eventually, giving intangible gifts may become second nature.
