Largely misunderstood for many years, mental illness was predominantly swept under the rug. When it was discussed, it was only whispered about in hushed tones. Today, more people are beginning to realize the importance of confronting mental illness head on so that steps to recovery can be taken, but unfortunately there is still a lot of social stigma surrounding mental health issues in our society.
As an online mental health therapist, I am dedicating my career to helping individuals overcome the challenges they face with their mental illnesses and overcoming the negative stereotype my clients face. You don’t have to be “crazy” to benefit from psychotherapy. In fact, there are many different situations therapy can help treat – and many of them are relatively common occurrences experienced by people all across the country. Here are a few examples of the different scenarios therapy can help treat.
If left unchecked, addiction can be incredibly debilitating. Unfortunately, many people do not realize they are developing addictive behaviors until the addiction already has them firmly in its grasp. Mental health counseling can be a great way to develop strategies for overcoming addictions of any kind, from alcohol to mobile devices.
Even the longest, most successful marriages go through their fare share of challenging times. Sometimes, couples therapy makes the difference between a marriage that lasts for many more years and a marriage that ends in a divorce. In our therapy sessions, I work with couples to identify their roles in the relationship and strategize ways to improve overall marital dynamics.
They cause physical challenges, but eating disorders stem from emotional issues. There are many different forms of emotional challenges that can lead to eating disorders, such as a feeling of lack of control or questions about self-worth. As an experienced psychologist, I work with clients to resolve the root of the problem causing their eating disorder.
Some people don’t know this about me, but I actually have a great deal of experience (and truly love) working with children and adolescents. Young people can experience several challenges as they grow, including poor grades, behavioral problems, attention seeking behavior, and ADD or ADHD. I can create a welcoming, low-stress environment to encourage your child or teenager to open up. Together, we can work towards finding more positive outlets and solutions for their behavior.
Sometimes, people seek therapy for something as seemingly “simple” as anxiety or persistent mood swings. This is is possibly one of the least understood reasons for seeking therapy, since some individuals are quick to dismiss anxiety as something that should be able to be controlled relatively easily. However, recovering from severe anxiety is often not at all simplistic. Many people who have sought therapy for their anxiety often experience faster and much more complete recoveries. See my earlier blog post for tips to help overcome anxiety.
Sexual Identification Issues
Though today’s generation is exploring their sexuality more and more, there is still a great deal of social stigma surrounding gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender individuals. I have a great deal of experience working with people who are struggling to express their true selves in the face of social expectations and individuals who are questioning their sexual identities.
And So Much More…
Honestly, it would be impossible to list all of the different types of situations and challenges that therapy can help treat. The truth is that anyone who is suffering from emotional, mental, or psychological challenges may be able to drastically improve their situation by seeking help from an experienced mental health therapist.
