In my years as a limited licensed psychologist Michigan, I have realized that many of my clients are very hesitant to begin therapy. I think this is primarily due to two main reasons:
- There are a lot of individuals who still believe that counseling is only for “crazy people,” and my prospective clients don’t want to be associated with these social stigmas.
- In order for their treatment to be successful, my clients have to allow themselves to be vulnerable – and being vulnerable can be a scary prospect.
Combating the social stigmas is a conversation all its own, and one for another day. Right now, I want to look specifically at how we can push past the fear of being vulnerable so we can seek the counseling services we need.
Overcoming the fear of being vulnerable can be a challenge, but when people feel comfortable with those they are with, they are much more willing to open up. Helping my clients to feel comfortable with me is a top priority, so this week I am dedicating my blog to helping each of you get to know me a little bit better. Here goes!
Get To Know Me!
|My husband Jim and me.
I earned my Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. I went on to get my Master of Arts and my Limited Licensed Psychologist certification at the Center for Humanistic Studies in Detroit.
I have over sixteen years of experience working in several different therapeutic settings, including academic, residential, and clinical. I love working with people of all ages, but I especially enjoy working with children, teens, and young adults. I believe I’m a good therapist because I strive to always be empathetic, dedicated, genuine, and compassionate. No matter what situation you may be facing, I would love to help you overcome it – or at the very least, lend a listening ear so you can get your troubles off of your chest.
You can generally find me outdoors, listening to music, enjoying the simpler things, and getting involved as much as I can – like judging a local school’s American Idol competition a few years ago and attending my clients’ plays or sporting events. It’s always a blast!
On a personal note… I have a wonderful husband, Jim Ruth. He is the rock to my roll. I also have a 3-year old pup, named Sassy, who I adore beyond words. Family means the world to me – my parents, brother, nieces (and of course Jim, the love of my life) are all part of who I am today.
The most important thing to remember is…
I’ll fight for you – and I’ll never give up!
